An Important Announcement Regarding the Future of That Takes the Cake
It is with a heavy heart and deep reflection that we announce the closure of That Takes the Cake, the last major cake show in the United States. After 18 remarkable years of celebrating artistry, creativity, and community within the world of sugar arts, we regret to inform you that we will not be hosting a show in 2025.
This decision did not come easily, as this year marked what would have been our 19th annual event—a milestone we had eagerly anticipated. However, various challenges have made it increasingly difficult to continue.
Our journey toward the 2025 show began with enthusiasm but also a delayed start due to several tragedies within our community. The loss of cherished individuals and institutions—such as Make It Sweet, one of our most generous and long-standing sponsors, and Magda, whose steadfast support was invaluable—deeply impacted us all. Their absence is felt not only in our hearts but also in the operational foundation of the event.
In addition to these losses, the challenges of organizing a show of this scale have proven insurmountable. As many of you who have coordinated events know, a successful show requires the enthusiastic participation of vendors, competitors, and attendees alike. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the enthusiasm among these groups this year did not match the needs of the show. Without sufficient participation, sustaining the event is not feasible.
The broader landscape has also shifted dramatically. Since the onset of COVID-19, the event industry—particularly cake shows—has faced significant obstacles, mirroring the struggles of small businesses. Compounding this, our event often coincided with other major gatherings, creating competition that further impacted our ability to thrive.
We want to assure all participants, attendees, and supporters that your financial contributions have been carefully managed. Every registration, vendor fee, and sponsorship payment will be refunded in full within the next week. Refunds processed via PayPal will be returned directly to the PayPal account used for the transaction, rather than any specific credit or debit card associated with it.
While this marks the end of That Takes the Cake as an annual event, the memories, friendships, and creative achievements it has fostered will live on in the hearts of all who were part of this extraordinary community.
Thank you for 18 incredible years. Your passion, artistry, and support made That Takes the Cake more than just a show—it was a celebration of creativity and connection.
With deepest gratitude,
The Board of Directors
